In June 2021, Nexxiot presented the Kingpin Monitor in collaboration with VTG. This maintenance-free sensor set is designed to improve safety in intermodal transport activities. When semi-trailers are being loaded onto pocket wagons, the display’s LED lights provide employees with a clear visual indication of the loading status. Representatives of AGORA Intermodal Terminals, a working group of European terminal operators, were given a detailed impression of the Nexxiot innovation during a trial loading under working conditions at the DUSS terminal in Hamburg-Billwerder. The participants were particularly convinced by the excellent implementation of the display and the easy handling of the Kingpin monitor.

“We were impressed by the excellent readability of the Nexxiot display. Due to the unique angle at which the display is mounted on both sides of the pocket wagon, the LED on the display can be seen even in direct sunlight and from a great distance. This feature is especially important for crane operators who have to move the semi-trailers. We would like to see this display become a European standard in the future as well as being able to be activated remotely,” said Antje Falk, founding member of AGORA and Managing Director of Baltic Rail Gate GmbH.

Kristian Kölsche, also Managing Director at Baltic Rail Gate GmbH, added: “Safety is a number one priority at the terminals. It must also be guaranteed if more goods are transported by rail in the future. Therefore, we welcome any technological innovation, such as the Nexxiot Kingpin Monitor, that brings more safety to operations.“

The handling of semi-trailers on pocket wagons in combined transport requires great diligence. Adverse conditions, such as high winds or other extreme weather conditions, or an incorrectly placed kingpin, can compromise loading safety if not checked carefully. Nexxiot’s Kingpin Monitor solution uses technology to address these challenges. The Kingpin sensor detects whether the kingpin is engaged and whether the hitch status is open or locked. This provides real-time information on the status of the semi-trailer to employees on site as well as to dispatchers and decision-makers who have access to the data via the Nexxiot Logistics Cloud.

The AGORA Intermodal Terminals Working Group was established in 2011 as a result of an EU project. AGORA Terminals kamen im „Corona-Jahr“ 2020 auf ein Umschlagvolumen von rund 3,8 Mio. Ladeeinheiten, dies ist mit -1% nur ein leichter Rückgang im Vergleich zu 2019. Anders als die ersten Umfragen Mitte 2020 es vermuten ließen, konnten viele Terminals das Umschlagniveau aus dem Vorjahr halten bzw. sogar zum Teil kräftig steigern. Die Verluste in einigen Terminals hielten sich im verkraftbaren einstelligen Prozentbereich.

Der Ausblick auf die beiden nächsten Jahre ist durchgängig positiv, die AGORA Terminals erwarten eine Erholung bzw. weitere Steigerung der Umschlagzahlen zwischen 5 und 8% p.a.. Die hierfür notwendige Terminalinfrastruktur sei hierfür gut gerüstet. Die Kunden der AGORA Terminals sind demnach aufgerufen, ihren Beitrag durch die Erbringung von hochwertigen KV-Produkten dazu zu leisten.

AGORA terminals achieved a handling volume of around 3.8 million loading units in the “Corona year” 2020; at -1%, this is only a slight decline compared to 2019. Contrary to what the initial surveys in mid-2020 indicated, many terminals were able to maintain the handling volume from the previous year or even increase it significantly in some cases. Losses at some terminals remained in the tolerable single-digit percentage range.

The outlook for the next two years is positive across the board, AGORA Terminals expecting a recovery or further increase of handling volume between 5% and 8% p.a.. The required terminal infrastructure is well equipped. The customers of AGORA Terminals are therefore called upon to make their contribution by providing high-quality CT products.

• Der Unfall in Dänemark und die diskutierten Konsequenzen dies erfordern.
• Die Diskussion des Themas und die Formulierung der Anforderungen wurde in einer Expertengruppe der AGORA Terminal Interessengruppe erarbeitet, diese werden auf der Website der AGORA Gruppe veröffentlicht und bekannt gemacht sowie zur weiteren Verbreitung und Umsetzung empfohlen. Dafür setzen sich die Mitglieder der Arbeitsgruppe ein.

CT-terminal operators, users and developers have been concerned with the design and handling because

• There is an interest in safe and most efficient handling;
• Lifting of the wheelsets from the rail (“derailment”) up to overriding of buffers during unloading may occur in individual cases;
• The accident in Denmark and the con-sequences discussed require this.

The discussion of the topic and the formu-lation of the requirements was worked out in an expert group of the AGORA working group, will be made available on the web-site of the AGORA group and published as well as recommended for further dissemination and implementation. The members of the working group are committed to this.
