The Marco Polo Information Day will provide presentations of ongoing projects as well as an introduction of the funding mechanism and the forthcoming call for proposals and targets at decision makers in the (intermodal) transport business.

Frankfurt am Main, 9 November 2009. The website of the AGORA project on efficient intermodal terminals was launched during the workshop meeting in Bologna on November 9, 2009.

Managers of key intermodal terminals located throughout Europe are cooperating in this Marco Polo project to exchange how to improve their terminal operations and increase the terminal efficiency. The 14 companies in total represent about 50 inland terminal sites with an annual handling capacity of almost 5.7 million loading units (9.1 million TEU) and thus contributed to a considerable modal shift from road to rail and inland waterways.

The website contains information about intermodal terminals, and will be updated regularly with good practice advice for the management of terminals.

The members of the consortium are representing any category of intermodal terminal with regard to the combined transport market segment provided at their facilities (continental and/or container hinterland service) and their location: at seaports (Interferryboats’ facilities in Antwerp, RSC Rotterdam), ferry ports (Baltic Rail Gate Lübeck), inland ports (e.g. DUSS terminal Duisburg, Neuss Trimodal, Linz Service), or “dry” inland sites (e.g. München, Köln, Rail Cargo Austria’s sites in Wien and Wels, Cargo Center Graz, Budapest BILK and Interporto Bologna, the freight village). The terminals offer a variety of services (transshipment, shunting, trucking, maintenance and repair, depot, …) and are linked to each other and third parties by intermodal services.

The project that commenced from the DIOMIS works commissioned by the International Union of Railways started already in January 2009 and is technically supported by Frankfurt-based consultancy KombiConsult.
